| Happiness Guide |
Happiness is an essential part of any productive human's well being. Pokemon are no different. Happiness is one of the many elements in raising a Pokemon, and can be beneficial for several reasons. Like many other aspects of Pokemon, happiness is calculated numerically. Most Pokemon start out with roughly 70 happiness points, though there are exceptions such as Chansey. The maximum number of happiness points a Pokemon can obtain is 255, and the minimum is 0.
Happiness-based Evolutions.
One of the benefits of raising a Pokemon's happiness is that certain Pokemon can evolve when they reach a certain level of happiness. However, sometimes there are other circumstances that need to be attended to other than just raising happiness. For example, to get an Eevee to evolve into Espeon, the Eevee would need to gain a certain amount of happiness, then level up in the morning or afternoon. Here is the list of Pokemon who evolve using happiness as well as additional stipulations if applicable.
Return and Frustration
The base damage of the moves Return and Frustration are determined by how happy the user's Pokemon is. If the Pokemon reaches max happiness, Return has a base damage of 102. If the Pokemon reaches minimum happiness, Frustration has a base damage of 102.
Raising a Pokemon's Happiness Level
There are several methods when it comes to raising a Pokemon's happiness in Diamond and Pearl.
1. The first method is simple. Simply walking or cycling with your Pokemon in your party will slightly raise its happiness. Equipping Soothe Bell to the Pokemon will make the process of making it happier twice as fast. The most effective way of increasing happiness with little effort is to go to Cycling Road and ride up and down until your Pokemon reaches the maximum level of happiness.
2. The second method is to use the Pokemon in battle frequently and level it up to gradually increase its happiness
3. The third method is to use poffins on your Pokemon. In the Pokemon's stat page, it will state what types of poffins it prefers. Check the Poffin Guide for a more in-depth walkthrough on the subject.
4. Visit the lady in Veilstone City who resides in a house under the gym. She will give one of your Pokemon a massage once per day.
5. Pokemon like to hold and use items. Using vitamins such as HP-Up, Calcium, Carbos, Zinc, etc will substantially increase a Pokemon's happiness level as well as the EV reducing berries such as Hondew Berries and Grepa Berries. Here is the list of items that will inrease a Pokemon's happiness level.
Lowering a Pokemon's Happiness Level
1. Let your Pokemon faint as many times as possible. It may not be pretty to watch, but a trainer has to do what a trainer has to do
2. Buy the herbs at the herb shop in Eterna City. Pokemon don't like the bitter taste.
3. Trade the Pokemon to a friend and trade back. Though it won't decrease the Pokemon's happiness all the way, it will reset its level back to its default number.
